Grace Avila attends Loyola University majoring in psychology; she hopes to continue on and achieve a Ph.D . She enjoys private viola lessons at Loyola, studying with Frank Babbitt and plays in the University Orchestra as one of their best violists. Grace is also a very competent violinist. She started lessons as a violinist 10 years ago and then added viola.  Now she is a versatile player on both viola and violin. Her plan is to have music as an integral part of her life forever. Canzonetta has helped her become a fine musician!

David Caplan plans to go to University of Illinois, majoring in cello performance!  David has recently been in a quartet that won the gold medal at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, and has appeared as soloist on From The Top! He has won many awards and is headed for a big career in music.  He began the Canzonetta Path when he was just a beginner and metamorphosed into an amazing cellist who played much chamber music and solos with us and even taught students.

Julia Kagan will attend Illinois State University majoring in psychology.  She plans to have a career related to psychology, music and dance.  Julia was chosen to appear as senior violin soloist with her high school orchestra.  She is also equally interested in dance and has choreographed several dances. She recently received the Leonard Bernstein Musicianship Award for musical contributions and creativity. Her name will be engraved on the Music Hall of Fame at Vernon Hills High School.

Tor Shepherd majors in mechanical engineering with robotics as his main hobby at the University of Illinois. He studies viola with Rudolf Haken and is in the Philharmonia Orchestra.  All of his solos and chamber playing in Canzonetta helped him in his musical style and gave him the opportunity to express himself while enhancing his viola skills.  He is enjoying his studies and keeps in touch with his former Canzonetta colleagues.

Canzonetta’s 2016 – 2017 Season was a great success!

By Helia Schramm

This year we had quite varied programs for the orchestras and were pleased to see the students rise to the technical and musical challenges that presented themselves.

Both orchestras performed varied literature; in Training Orchestra, we performed the music of Handel as well as more familiar Irish melodies. In Intermediate Orchestra, the variety was quite refreshing, from Brandenburg Concerti, Haydn Divertimenti and a solo quartet by Vivaldi to ballet favorites throughout the season.  As a very special treat, one of our own members, sang an operatic aria accompanied by several members of the orchestra.

It is always interesting for me to note how Mr. Kagan approaches a difficult musical problem— when I point out a potentially difficult musical challenge, he always says to me, “Good, we will find a way to teach this to the  kids and they will be better musicians because of it.”  And they are!

We look forward to another exciting season of beautiful music in the 2017-2018 season!
