Canzonetta, a Chicago area based youth string chamber orchestra, announces their biennial trip to Toulouse, France, where American students will play with French students from the Toulouse Conservatoire culminating in a concert performance conducted by Maestro Hilel Kagan and assisted by concertmistress Helia Schramm. On March 28th, local high school students will travel to the south of France and be hosted by local French families for a week.
“It is a privilege and joy to work with strings of such caliber” Kagan said. Ms. Schramm, the artistic director commented “The sound produced by the American and French students has its own uniqueness”.
This year marks the sixth exchange since this French American exchange began. It had its start when French pianist and teacher, Marion Kurylo, approached Maestro Kagan to play the music of modern French composers in his critically acclaimed orchestra, Concertante di Chicago Orchestra. From there the project evolved in to an exchange with Roubaix Conservatoire, where Kagan conducted Canzonetta and Roubaix students in a combined concert. Two years later, at Toulouse Conservatoire, the project continued, with the same cultural influences, each culture learning about the other and fostering long lasting friendships.
